Matrix Games
The developer Matrix Games was founded in 2001 by David Heath – and
less than ten years old, Matrix has sixty gaming titles under its belt, most of which are
strategy and wargames. With around 30 employees, it almost seems impossible how the
company has not only produced so much, but maintained a policy of assisting smaller
developers as well!
We can't imagine what the Matrix Games headquarters in New York looks like, other than
that it must be a constant hive of activity. Just a couple weeks ago, Matrix co-released a
demo for the title WW2: Time of Wrath, an RTS with political and diplomatic elements
alongside historical combat. Their upcoming title is World in Flames, a unique strategy
game based off the classic board game, requiring a truly intellectual military mind to
succeed.
Much like Maxis in its earlier stages, Matrix Games
produces intricate, detailed simulations whether it be combat, sports, or even space in
the case of Starships Unlimited: Divided Galaxies. They focus much less on creating a
visually realistic game, and much more on challenging the player in new ways again and
again. Some of their games even have powerful editors, with which players have made their
own maps and even had them released as a download on the Matrix Games website.
Their most well known series is Close Combat, the
company's main real-time strategy series. Close Combat: The Longest Day is the last
installation, a huge remake of Close Combat: Invasion Normandy. As a true simulation, the
number of conditions, options and strategies available to the player is staggering. Every
soldier matters, whether they are entrenched and mowing down enemies with machine guns or
storming the Normandy beach. The remake has all the original missions, plus sixty new ones
in order to give players even more gameplay.
Matrix Games has released 7 original games in the past year, among which are Close Combat:
The Longest Day, Horse and Musket: Volume I, and WWII: Time of Wrath. They have released
19 strategy games total since their founding.
